Description
Grand Banks Dory. One of the most recognizable American fishing craft, the dory was lightweight, inexpensive to build, and extremely seaworthy (once loaded). Dories were carried nested on the decks of fishing schooners until they reached the Grand Banks off the coast of Nova Scotia. Then one man could work his dory dawn to dusk setting and hauling lines of fish. In the 19th century the average cod weighed 50 pounds, and each dory could hold about 4,000 pounds of fish. (this description adapted from a caption posted by Lowell’s Boat Shop in Amesbury , Massachusetts – the last remaining commercial dory builder).
